Restoring Your Old Photographs – Your Family Tree Magazine Article

I was approached by Your Family Tree magazine, to write an article about restoring old photographs and photograph restoration and storage.

My article appeared in the May edition of Your Family Tree magazine which is on sale from 24rd April.

Your Family Tree is actually an excellent magazine and is packed with interesting and useful information relating to every aspect of genealogy and family trees for both beginners and more advanced studies.

Family Tree research has become very popular recently partly due to the Who Do You Think You Are TV series which is invariably fascinating and just about every person whose family tree is focussed upon uncovers startling facts about their ancestors.

When I see some of the old photographs they show I find myself twitching because I could make them look so much better!

Photographs are the best way of remembering and recording our families and photograph restoration and photograph retouching and editing makes it possible for present and future generations to have lasting, quality images of their families as well as the places they grew up and more.

The article I have written explains the importance and benefits of sorting through your photographs and preserving them and offers simple ways of storing, cataloguing, and repairing them yourself.

Recent Examples of Photograph Restoration, Retouching and Manipulation

Here are some recent examples of photographs that I was asked to manipulate. I optimised the photographs first by restoring them and then made the required combinations. Firstly I removed the car door, tree, litter and cigarette end to result in a good photograph of the couple. From this image I was asked to make a combination of the woman with her dad as she didn’t have a good picture of them together. Then with the picture of the couple within the group I extracted them, created the background and of course the correct number of arms!

New Website Now Live

The all-new Photographs Forever website went live at the end of February with more simple navigation as well as the ability to download your own scanned images directly to me for restoration, evaluation or even just an opinion.

Thanks to Grant at Profitable Websites for his help to put it all together. (www.profitablewebsites.co.uk)

If you can’t find what you’re looking for or have any suggestions as to how this website could be improved, I’d love to hear from you.

Photograph Storage and Editing – Picasa by Google

Are your digital photographs organised on your computer so you can easily see them all in date order, in albums/groups of types og photographs etc? If not then take a look at Picasa by Google.

Picasa is a free downloadable program created by Google and is an image-organiser and image-viewer for editing and organising digital photographs, plus an integrated photo-sharing website.

Download the program, Picasa will then search your computer for all your photographs (or just search the places you select? and organise them into ‘albums’ of your files. This enables you to view the pictures as well as do a considerable amount of very easy editing like straightening, cropping, adjusting brightness and contrast, colour balancing and a whole host of effects like black and white, sepia, soft focus etc. The great thing is that any changes you make to your photographs in Picasa do not alter the original files on your computer as well as any changes you do make being completely un-doable.
